The Payroll section of Avionté contains a deduction sub-section used to configure deductions at an employee level per supplier. Before setting up a deduction here, the deduction type must first be defined in the Transaction Type section of Admin Tools.

Add a Deduction
- In the Employee section, search for and select the employee for whom the deduction is being set up.
-
Expand Payroll in the Employee sub-menu and select Deduction.
- Click New Deduction in the upper-left portion of the Deduction tab. The fields clear for entry.
- Confirm the correct supplier is selected in the Supplier drop-down.
- Review the Max % of Net field, which sets the default maximum percentage of the employee's net income available for deductions.
- Click the Deduction Type drop-down and select the appropriate deduction.
-
For Amount/Percentage, select one of the following options:
Option Description Fixed Amount Deducts a set dollar amount from employee pay. Enter the amount in the Amount field. Percentage Applies a percentage deduction to Gross or Net pay. Enter the percentage in the Percent field. Up to 3 decimal places are supported. - Check Flag During Payroll if the deduction should trigger a warning during payroll processing, allowing you to verify or modify it before finalizing.
- Check Court Ordered if the deduction is court-mandated. A warning will appear during payroll processing to prompt review.
-
In the Deduction Max % field, set the maximum percentage of the total paycheck the deduction can claim. This value overrides the Max % of Net and should reflect any court order or legal requirements.
Note: Deduction Max % will only appear with certain Deduction Types. If it is not visible below the Deduction Pay Cycle field it may not be applicable to your current deduction type.
For example, if the max is set to 50% and Net Income (NI) is $100, the maximum deductible (Disposable Income) is $50. When two garnishments of equal amounts are processed in the same sequence, each receives $25. When amounts differ (e.g., $50 and $10), the system weights them proportionally:
- Add amounts together to find the total: $50 + $10 = $60
- Divide each by the total to find proportional weight: $50/$60 = 0.83 and $10/$60 = 0.17
- Multiply each weight by disposable income: 0.83 × $50 = $41.50 and 0.17 × $50 = $8.50
If one garnishment is set to sequence 1 and the other to sequence 2, the full $50 goes to sequence 1 and $0 to sequence 2.
-
Use the Sequence field to set the order in which deductions are taken from the employee's paycheck. The system processes lower sequence numbers first in full before moving to higher ones. Deductions sharing the same sequence number are prorated if needed.
Note: There are restrictions on which deduction types can share a sequence. Refer to the table below.Deduction Type Should Be Placed With Cannot Be Placed With Disposable Income Exempt Disposable Income Exempt All-or-Nothing, Non-Disposable Income Exempt Non-Disposable Income Exempt Non-Disposable Income Exempt Disposable Income Exempt, All-or-Nothing All-or-Nothing All-or-Nothing Non-Disposable Income Exempt, Disposable Income Exempt Tiered None All Levy None All - The Active checkbox is checked by default, making the deduction live once saved. Unchecking it excludes the deduction from payroll calculations.
-
The Per Hour checkbox may appear if configured by your administrator.
Note: Per Hour deductions calculate as: Rate × (Regular Hours + Overtime Hours + Double Time Hours). - From the Deduction Pay Cycle drop-down, select how often the deduction applies: hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, semi-monthly, or yearly.
-
In the Date fields, enter the deduction's effective dates:
Option Description Additional Information Start Date Enter the date the deduction becomes effective (MM/DD/YYYY) or select from the calendar. Backdated checks falling within the deduction's start and end dates will have the deduction applied. End Date Enter the date the deduction ends. Useful for annual plans or fixed-term deductions. Leave blank for open-ended deductions. - In the Agency drop-down, select the entity receiving the deduction payment, such as an insurance provider or 401(k) administrator.
- In the Reference Number field, enter the employee's deduction account number.
-
In the Limits section, configure maximum deduction amounts as needed:
Option Description Apply Limits Check this box to enforce the limit values below. Must be enabled alongside the PayPeriodLimit Transaction Property. Pay Period Limit Maximum amount that can be deducted per pay period. Especially useful when a percentage method is used and a cap is required. Monthly Limit Maximum amount that can be deducted per month. Yearly Limit Maximum amount that can be deducted per year. Life Time Limit Maximum total amount that can ever be deducted over the employee's lifetime.

Add & View Notes

Other
On the Other tab, select which Staffing Supplier is responsible for handling the deduction.
One-Time Deduction Tip
If a one-time deduction isn't subtracting from a paycheck as expected, follow these steps:
- Adjust the Start Date to one day before the pay period begins.
- Set the End Date to a date past the end of the pay period, or leave it blank.
- Check the Apply Limits box for the deduction.
- Set a Lifetime Limit equal to the deduction amount.
If needed, void or reverse the employee's incorrect check and reissue a corrected one. Process a reversal if a check has already been issued.
